Evaluation Question 5 Script

Our target audience is teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15 to 25. Because of this we added elements that they can take pleasure in. Of course violence appeals to our audience as it is particularly thrilling keeping them engaged and guessing whats next to come. We also used a plot twist to keep that audience self-guessing themselves, meaning they are outsmarted by the thriller. This also increases the element of suspense. They key conventions that we used fits in with this: violence, plot twists, suspense, action and villains.

My film has only one genre and that is a thriller. As shown in my eveluation question 1 there are a number of films that are influential to my thriller. One example is American Sniper, we took the concept of sniping as we thought it was suspensful and re-wired the idea to create something new. American Sniper is a hybrid film made up of drama/action and war.

The thriller is set in a countryside environment and is very much separated from people. I feel the setting very much appeals to the audience because it is a quiet place which raises the suspense and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. A teenage target audience wants to be kept entertained or else they will be distracted from the movie.

The narrative in our thriller has many tense plot twists and climactic build ups. At the end the sniper shoots his trainee recruit, taking a well found partnership and turning it into murder with no remorse, creates attraction to the audience to see how the plot develops further.

We used no music in our thriller to highlight the quiet atmosphere and environment that creates the intensity. When placing in the titles we made certain that we used a font that is easy to read and fits with the genre. The font we used was courier new regular hard drop shadow. We ensured the titles were displayed for a period of time that is long enough for slow readers to understand and process, but quick enough so the fast readers don't get bored. This also applies with the names od stars. We did not create a logo for our film as we felt it was individual on its own.

To appeal to the audience we used CGI to add effects onto the film. We created a gunshot wound to exaggerate the impact of the shot. We also added a sniper scope over the point of view shots to create realism for the audience.

Evaluation Question 3 - Part 1

Question 3 Part 1 (Unlimited budget decisions) Autumn Mitchell

If I was fortune enough to be able to have this film made real, I would have both the film made and distributed by Warner Bros. It’s no secret to anybody that Warner bros have created some of the best and well received films over its time in operation, alongside this the films never fail to disappoint and always manage to impress. Warner Bros are a well-established entertainment brand name and they have made and distributed some of the biggest known films both new and old, there include films such as:

·        Harry Potter (franchise)

·        Dark Knight

·        Suicide Squad

·        The Exorcist

·        Casablanca

·        Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

·        The Shining

·        Conjuring 2

The reason I would personally love to use warner bros for both distribution and making the film, away from the facts, is that as a child I remember putting a movie in the dvd or video player and as the titles rolled I always knew as soon as it was Warner Bros I knew I would love whatever it was. Until starting media studies there were many other companies I recognised the logo and sound from but would never remember a name whereas Warner Bros always stuck with me. As they are so well established it is no question that this company produces high quality and expensive films with huge budgets on the films, and for this reason knowing how amazing the thriller could be if this company was to help film and distribute I know it would be the best it can be and will be seen by a wide audience of loyal customers.

If I had an unlimited budget and could hire anybody in the famous and movie world to be both the target and the two main characters I would of course go large and get the best of the best. The older man who takes the young boy under his wing but eventually turns on him, essentially the “lone wolf” I would want to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio, because he is substantially older than the younger boy who would be played by someone of the age around 20. I would choose him because I have seen him before in previous movies and I know that he can play the business man turn savage as this character needs to be. In my eyes, he would be perfect for the role and would rake in many of his loyal fans to see him meaning the film would go large. The person I would like to play the younger boy who eventually gets killed by the man who teaches him the art of being a sniper would be Brenton Thwaites. He started in one of my all-time favourite films called “The Giver”, his acting skills are empowering and it is impossible to take your eyes off him and he is so well fitted to the role in terms of age and experience making him perfect for the role.

Evaluation Question 2

Our thriller primarily represents Status and age. We wanted our thriller to convert to the stereotypes when talking about the working industry. We wanted to convey that as age increases and the more time is spent in the job meaning professionalism for the older characters, we also used this concept to highlight that along with age, the status someone may have in the particular place of work affects the consequences you may face as a beginner.  We wanted to keep the stereotype that the adults will always be better than the teenagers and young adults as so perceived in today’s society.

Our professional sniper is an adult man. We wanted to almost immediately show the audience that he was professional and of a higher level than our trainee character this therefore conforming to the stereotype of age and status complimenting each other and the higher the better. Although typical of the adult to be in charge for our plot this was important to be presented this way to grasp the idea that what the professional decides is final. We used someone younger to show this as we wanted there to be a harsh brutality in consequences when a professional’s needs are not met.

We dressed our professional in dark trousers, a large green coat, boots and a black hat. We dressed him this way to give the impression that he is so good at what he does that he does not need the full camouflage gear as he can always get away with it. This contrasts our trainee who we dressed in a navy-blue jumpsuit, dark boots, and a camouflage jacket. We dressed him this way to present that he is not of a high enough level in his training to be able to use his skills to get away as those are skills he does not have fully developed once again converting to the stereotype.

The first point at which this is presented fully is when the two characters take position amongst the bushes. It is presented at first in levels, the real sniper who is training his recruit is sat on a piece of wood whereas the trainee is laying on the ground. These two levels present the difference is status between the two characters, the two men are both part of the same occupation of sniping, however, the older man is a professional which contrasts the younger man who is merely in training. The use of dialogue shows the audience this contrast in status as he begins to instruct and give orders to the boy questioning his knowledge thoroughly saying things such as “set her up” “which way are they blowing” but on the other hand the boy on the receiving end is intimidated and does not speak much to show that as he is of a lower status he does not need to speak and address the professional, he only answers simply such as “yes” and “left and right”. When filming we used the camera to make a clear shot of the two characters in one frame, throughout the beginning conversation when we convert between one character to another the two levels are implied by what appears around and behind the characaters in the shot, this is then made factually clear to the audience showing the shot of the difference in levels. When in the editing process we chose to give the trainee more screen time in this section, we did this because our target audience is young adults and we wanted them to form a connection with our trainee who is of a similar age and get them to sypathise with him during his learning process and getting the audience to make their own formed opinions of if they want him to shoot or want him to not. All of these things in this first section convey our aims for the characters difference in status.

The most important time at which the contrast in status is shown is in the during the trainee sniping a civillian. When the trainee goes to take his shot there is clear hesitation shown through the mise-en-scene, his finger begins to remble when reaching to pull the trigger and he almost shuts his eyes to suggest he cannot bare to look at what it is he is about to do, this suggesting that as he is of this low status he does not want to go through with soemthong he is not ready to do. The volume of the dialogue coming from the professional increases dramatically, he begins to show agression and anger through his tone of voice “soldier you are about to lose your target” “take the shot do it NOW”, this gives the impression that he is ill-tempered and cannot handle someone as low down as the trainee daring to ruin a mission for someone as important as himself. The camera pace inceases and the panning across of the target becomes shaken to show his hesitation, the editing process we used shot-reverse-shot on a number of occasions whilst having the dialogue of the professional go over the top of these shots. The way the dialogue goes over all the different shots implies that he is of such a high status his word needs to be said no matter what goes on in the shot while the trainee does not utter a word once again defining the adult is in charge.

The aftermath is the final portrayal of this contrast in status. The professional and trainee flea the sniping site and appear in the woods, the professional pulls out a cigar, this brings us back to defining age, the trainee looks baffled at the concept of him having a smoke showing that he really is young enough not to understand why he would want to smoke a cigar. “Start packing down a riffle” the professional once again gives him orders and does not accept any questions asked. The trainee goes on to apoligise for his hesitation whilst carrying out the orders set by the professional the shot goes to a close-up of the trainee packing away the riffle, he suddenly falls to the ground as he is shot in the head by the professional. The shot revals the professional stood behind him pointing a gun at his head. This moment is really important as it represents that the higher the status the more you can decide including who lives and who dies.

Editing Reflection

After shooting our thriller we went up to the edit suite to put the thriller together. We had alot of footage to choose from so we began by going the the rushes and choosing our favourite few shots of each of the small scenes and put them into a seperate folder to go through and begin putting tother. We followed our initial sequence when putting it together, it was clear which the best shots were making it simple to put together. Of course there were some issues such as because we shot outside some shots had more lighting than others as sometimes the sun was out and other times it was hidden so we had to consider using colour gradient. In the end we put the footage together and all of the colours were very similar in the shots we chose so no extras to change the colours that appeared.

We used Adobe Premiere Pro when editing our thriller. Once the sequence had finally been put together we moved on to adding the effects. No sounds had to be re-recorded so that was on thing we did not have to worry about. As our thriller involves a shot thats from point of view of the recruited sniper, we went online and chose a sniper scope template and went from there to create a scope that using CGI we added over the shot to create the effect of looking through the scope. It took a while to do and it was slightly complex but in the end it looked very effective and realistic. We then needed to add in the gunshot wound, Matt helped us with this, after chosing the way we wanted the shot wound to look on the actor Matt showed us how to get the wound to track and stick to a certin spot, upon doing this all CGI effects were finished. Next we added in the titles, this was most likely the easiest part of the editing process. We simply added the text and changed the font to something that fits the spy themed thriller and is easy to read. We wrote out all the information and it appeared across some of the shots in the thriller and they appeared for just the right amount of time for the audience. The final title appeared on a black background at the end of the thriller and it was the title, we decided to name it "The Recruitment".

The last thing we did was add in the gunshot sound effect. There were many times of gunshot sounds stored onto the computer and there must have been 100 to choose from. We dicided to use the most accurate noises to fit each of the individual guns used as props in the thriller. For the sniper we of course used the sniper riffle effect which is reasonably quiet as a sniper gun would be, and for the final noise we used a handgun sound for the handgun. Once this was completed we had finished our thriller and it was ready to be posted.

Shoot Day Reflection

Shoot day was on thw 21st January 2017, upon reaching the media block it was concluded by everyone involved that our thriller idea needed to change but nobody was sure exactly what to. My group and I and also Matt were keen on the sniper story originally, however one of our actors (Ezra) could not make it to the shoot so we were left with only Mike which we found out the day previous. On shoot-day we had a look through the costume bag and decided to see what there was, there was a blue prison like jumpsuit a pair of large trousers, a large green jacket and a camo jacket with a pair of boots. We used these items of clothing to re-think the idea as quickly as possible. One of the boys in my media class (Vova) voulenteered to be our second actor.

We began to think of sniper movies that we knew, movies such as: American Sniper, Jack Reacher and Leon, and tried to decide if there were any ideas we could grab from something we have seen before. I have always thought that Leon is an intriguing film with an amazing plot. We had a discussion and took away the idea of having a young protegee and turned it into a recruitment. We decided the plot would follow this:

A highly trained sniper takes the decision that he wants somebody to work with so he can kill more people faster, a young boy is taken out with the sniper to have a trial and see if he can do the job. He will then be faced with the task of killing a civillian but hesitates to go through with it. After the job is done they flea the scene, a short conversation takes place between the two men and in a shock plot twist the sniper shoots his recruit for hesitating, and we will end it there on a cliff-hanger.

We took the mini bus to our inital location for our other thriller (Cornhill) and began to set up close to the woods to make the location look as secrative and rural as posssible. We did many different angles and things when shooting each part of the thriller we used, mid-shot, wide shot, close up and hand held. We used a micro-phone that we hand held and pointed at the source of the noise to make it audible and to drown out any unwanted background noise. We made sure we had plenty of shots on every little scene we did and in the end had an amazing selection of footage.

Although our idea changed on the day we still used our shoot schedule to give ourselves a rough idea of how to handle this thriller and it went really well. The whole morning ran completely smoothly and we are really pleased with what we did and we are now ready for editing!

Sniper 2: This is important, what are we doing here?... go on, say it!

Costume Finalisation

We have fially as a group come to a final decision as to the costumes we want each of the characters to wear for our thriller.

Firstly the man who gets assasinated we have decided we would like him to wear an official looking suit and tie, preferably a black suit, white shirt and a red tie. The red tie is to be significant to the colour of danger and an indication that he is not aware of what he is about to face. The reason behind this costume is that we want the man to look overally official to give the impression that he is a serious man much like his costume which may indicate that he is a villan and not the man we favour as he is not as important to the thiller as the sniper yet his death is crutial. We wanted him to have a mobile in one hand to take his call, the phone is going to be a nokia flip phone so that it is a phone he is likely to be able to bin after so that all information is hidden. Another asset to his image is him holding a file to indicatied highly confidential papers that gives a cause for his assasination.
We next wanted the watcher (Ezra) to be dressed completely in black so that he is not easily spotted and comoflages better so that him and his partner do not risk easily being spotted. The breakdown of the costume is a black turtle neck, black beanie, black jeans and black shoes. He will also have the binoculars prop aswell to complete the look. The reason behind this costume is because we want to imediately show the audience using mise en scene that this man is experienced and he has clearly done this before, shwoing professionalism which gives insight into this character and makes him interesting.

The last character, the sniper (mike) to be in an over exaggerated costume, we wanted him to wear a outfit that consists of entirely camoflage clothing. We wanted this to give diversity between the two characters and show a contrast in terms of status in the company, we also wanted to show that although he tries to do all the best and he is good at sniping he is not fully aware of the way he is acting at work leading to other issues between them. The watcher is shocked and dissaproves of this as he cannot take his work seriously.

Sunday 15 January 2017

Sequence Breakdown

1. Mike walks in and we do the shot of his feet as he walks.
2. After we film his feet for a few seconds we change to the shot of the drone circling the house to establish the setting in a birds eye view.
3. Mike places the case onto the floor and lays in position and goes to open the case and gets interrupted by a phone call from his wife which begins.
4. When Mike says "just some business with an old friend" we cut over to Charlie who is sat in a chair being filmed from behind with a drink in his left hand and cigarette in the other.
5. Charlie receives a phone call and so stubs out the cigarette he rises and says "what?!" and looks up then walks off the cameras sight and to the corridor.
6. It cuts back to Mike and Ezra enters and so their argument begins.
7. As the argument goes on shots of Charlie are seen going up the stairs and a corner shot.
8. After Mike and Ezra say "we already got one of them we just need to him and then its over", Charlie stops at the window and says "assassinated?"
9. There is a tap at the window and Charlie turns his head and says "I'll call you back".
10. Ezra and Mike say the following:
"Target in position?"
"Confirmed"
"Permission to shoot?"
11. Charlie approaches and peers at the window, he opens the windows (slow-mo).
12. Ezra says "Confirmed".
13. Charlie is shot.
14. Ezra and Mike exchange looks and stand up to exit.
15. They both leave but Mike dropped his phone and his wife begins to call him again but the phone is on the floor.
16. A female hand picks up the phone and swipes to answer then the film ends.

Prop Receipt

However, there has appeared to be a slight issue with regards to the gun, as when it arrived it turned out to be a poster, as Kris did not read what the product was properly before purchasing. Due to this we have spoken to members of staff at the school and they have agreed to allow us to use the prop sniper riffle used last year.

Monday 9 January 2017

Research 2 - Spotter

Once the shot is taken, the spotter watches the shot to help the sniper readjust his aim or his position in the unlikely event that he misses his target. The way that the spotter watches the shot is fascinating. High velocity, long-range rounds like the kind used in a sniper rifle actually leave a vapor trail as they fly through the air. The spotter can track the shot by watching for that vapor trail. Army Ranger Sniper says, "It just looks like mixed up air. You can see through it, but you see the distortion."

In observation missions, the two can take turns using the spotter scope to spy on the enemy. This helps to avoid eye fatigue and allows one team member to rest while the other watches. This is important, since in many cases they can be out there observing for days at a time. The shooter fires the shot while the spotter assists in observation of targets, atmospheric conditions and handles ancillary tasks as immediate security of their location, communication with other parties; including directing artillery fire and close air support. The flanker's task is to have observed areas not immediately visible to the sniper or spotter and assist with the team's perimeter and rear security therefore they are usually armed with an assault rifle or battle rifle. Both spotter and flanker carries additional ammunition and associated equipment.

The spotter detects, observes, and assigns targets and watches for the results of the shot. Using their spotting scope and/or rangefinder, they will also read the wind by using physical indicators and the mirage caused by the heat on the ground. Also, in conjunction with the shooter, they will accurately make calculations for distance, angle shooting, mil dot related calculations, correction for atmospheric conditions and leads for moving targets. It is not unusual for the spotter to be equipped with a notepad and a laptop computer specifically for performing these calculations.

Research 1 - Sniper

The key to sniping is accuracy, which applies to both the weapon and the shooter. The weapon should be able to consistently place shots within tight tolerances. The sniper in turn must utilize the weapon to accurately place shots under varying conditions. A sniper must have the ability to accurately estimate the various factors that influence a bullet's trajectory and point of impact such as: range to the target, wind direction, wind velocity, altitude and elevation of the sniper and the target and ambient temperature. Mistakes in estimation compound over distance and can decrease lethality or cause a shot to miss completely. A sniper team consists of a sniper and a spotter. The two-man team offers many advantages over the deployment of a lone sniper in the field. The spotter carries his own special scope that is much more powerful than the scope on a sniper rifle. The spotter uses his scope to help the sniper observe objectives and set up the shot. The two soldiers work together to get to the objective safely and discreetly and then set up a position. Here's the general process:

The term "hide site" refers to a covered and concealed position from which a sniper and his team can conduct surveillance and/or fire at targets. A good hide conceals and camouflages the sniper effectively, provides cover from enemy fire and allows a wide view of the surrounding area. Many snipers use Ghillie suits to hide and stay hidden. Ghillie suits vary according to the terrain into which the sniper wishes to blend. For example, in dry, grassy wasteland the sniper will typically wear a Ghillie suit covered in dead grass. Snipers are trained for the detection, identification, and location of a targeted soldier in sufficient detail to permit the effective employment of lethal and non-lethal means. Since most kills in modern warfare are by crew-served weapons, reconnaissance is one of the most effective uses of snipers. They use their aerobic conditioning, infiltration skills and excellent long-distance observation equipment (optical scopes) and tactics to approach and observe the enemy. In this role, their rules of engagement typically let them shoot at high-value targets of opportunity, such as enemy officers.
Snipers are also utilized in support roles. These support roles can be an over-watch position or a blocking action. When a sniper is in an over-watch position, he sets himself up in a concealed place that gives him a clear view of the battlefield. There he can support the assault force by taking out enemy forces that are endangering the advancing platoon. In a blocking action, snipers set up to help secure a position that is controlled by their platoon. They may set up on a roof and help ground forces defend their position. Snipers don't just shoot people. They are often ordered to destroy material targets. A sniper may shoot generators, radios, transmitters, or fuel and water supplies.

Props

Mobile phone that belongs to sniper 1. The script shows that sniper 1 is being unprofessional on the job by taking a prolongued phone call to his wife, this giving sniper 2 the indication that perhaps this is not the job for him and that maybe he should advise sniper 1 to consider a different career prospect. The mobile phone creates the tension in the thriler, a family man who has found somebody to love and has had a child who he also loves, is capable of speaking to hs wife normally and keeping a continuous lie as to his occupation and his whereabouts while also being able to assasinate people without feeling a touch of regret or empathy, two qualities you could expect from a man like him. Two faced.

We also wanted the "extra" whose shadow is seen through the window to be holding a mobile phone most likely to be a flip phone, we wanted this to give an indication that he has some sense of importance to the following story that continues after the opening sequence, we wanted to show a possiblility that he has information that perhaps he should not have meaning that there is a motive as to why he is assasinated in the first place. The mobile phone is not essential however it will give some sense as to why he is pacing around because often on the phone people have a habit to walk and talk.

Next we wanted to use a pair of binoculars for the watcher (sniper 2 - Ezra) to use. We wanted this to indicate that sniper 2 is the most knowledgeable, this is shown by the way he is the one that gets to speak to the big boss for conformation as to being allowed to perfrom the shot and the way he is above and in charge of sniper 1 giving him authority. The watcher gives the preparation and the "ok" to sniper 1 but his importance is that he highered sniper 1 and no more needs to be said.

The most important prop is the sniper gun, there annot be a sniper, of course this is the most important prop because it shows the assasination in the most descrete way. We decided that it should be a sniper gun because upon further research we we discovered that the sniper gun in much quieter than other types of guns we were originially looking at using meaning it will make the most sense to the story line of descrete professionals that always get away without a trace.
